We have all heard it time and time again, in order to lose weight you have to exercise and eat right. Yet, most people are not happy with this answer and they keep asking the same question to others hoping for a different answer. They are hoping for some miracle diet, special cleanse, detox, workout or magical pill that will provide the results they want with out putting in the work. But when it comes down to it, the best remedy is good old fashioned hard work and discipline.
It takes discipline to achieve the weight loss and goal weight you are after. It takes discipline in your lifestyle choices, your eating decisions, your workouts, your stress and even your sleep. Obviously the choices you have been making have not lead you to the result you seek so it is time to shake things up, have some structure and be super disciplined in your approach. The more disciplined you are the greater your results will be.
Most people do not want to hear what they have to do because it is boring, hard and just does not sound fun. They want to continue eating crappy processed food, feeling terrible, going out to big expensive rich dinners, barely moving, barely sleeping and keep drinking their alcohol but yet want all the results. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.
Let’s break down what it takes to be disciplined in your eating choices. You are in 100% control of what you put in your mouth so why not start by eating whole, fresh real food. The more real food you eat, the better you will feel, the more energy you will have and the more inclined you will be to start moving your body. Sure, it might mean you have to put in some extra effort in preparing your meals and planning them out for the week but that is the price you have to pay to get to where you want to be. You don’t have time to eat breakfast in the morning? Either get up earlier or make it the night before. Proper planning for the day will ensure you are in control of your nutritional intake. For me I believe nutrition is the easiest part once you have control over it. Try to eat protein with every meal and pair it with a bunch of multi colored fruits and vegetables. Easy. Simple. Let’s make it really easy for you:
Breakfast: Eggs anywhere from 1 -6 depending on your hunger level, piece of fruit (apple, banana, berries, etc) handful of nuts. Not an egg fan, how about sausage, turkey sausage, bacon, ham, chicken
Lunch: Big ass salad with lots of vegetables and protein (chicken, steak, fish). No croutons and dressing on the side.
Dinner: Piece of meat (ham, chicken, steak, lamb, duck, etc) and vegetables (carrots, green beans, asparagus, peppers, onions, sweet potatoes)
All of this seems super easy (and it is) but yet most people can not adhere to it. Why? Discipline. They are not disciplined enough to stick to the correct formula. They want to still enjoy their tasty calorie deficient foods, enjoy life and some feel like they are missing out. Oh, you say you go out a lot for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Well it’s still simple to eat right when you are out. Have a an omelette for breakfast with no toast, a salad for lunch and some meat and vegetables for dinner. I believe most restaurants can accommodate your eating choices. You see the pattern repeating yet? Good.
It is a snowball effect really; the more nutritious and healthy foods you eat, the more you will continue to eat and vice versa. For most people, they wake up late, grab something from a drive thru as they race off to work. They feel bloated, stuffed, inflamed and for a little while, pretty good. Then their blood sugar starts dropping from all the garbage they consumed and they start feeling crappy until they eat again. Lather, rinse, repeat. I guarantee if you eat correctly, you will feel a noticeable difference within in a week if you stay true to it and be disciplined.
Not only do you have to be disciplined in your eating but also in your exercising. Yes it is true that 80% of what you consume controls your body weight and body fat, however, I want to discuss the other 20%. You need to be disciplined and move your body. The easiest form is walking. Walking is cheap, easy, and highly effective. I would suggest you find a time to where you can walk everyday. Write it down in your planner, find a walking buddy, and be disciplined and try to do it at a set time everyday. Before work, during your lunch break (since you have all that time now because you bring your lunch) or after dinner. My favorite time to walk is early in the morning around 7 when it is still cool and calm out before all the hustle and bustle of the working commuters. I also go on another walk with my dogs after dinner and find it is a nice way to unwind, reflect, think about the day and the future.
You have to think about how bad you want it and what you are willing to give up to get there. You ARE going to have to give up things you love and you ARE going to make sacrifices. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. It is time to do something different and get the result you want. All it takes is some discipline.
